Aging Out and Speaking Out

| May 17th, 2012

1,500 young people age out of foster care in Texas every year. Dustin Haley entered foster care when he was eight years old and left in 2008 when he turned 18. Today, with support from Foster Care to Success, he is a junior at the University of Texas at Austin. Dustin has become an articulate and passionate voice for foster youth – so much so that NPR recently interviewed him on the subject. “I felt that in my entire life, I pretty much didn’t have control over anything,” Dustin said. “You don’t decide where you live, you don’t decide what meals you eat; you really don’t decide anything. But with education, I could decide that I can make an ‘A’ in this class, I could decide that I want to go to college, and that I’m going to college.”

Jade Wallace: Giving Back

| May 17th, 2012

Meet Jade Wallace, a recent Boise State student who, with support from Foster Care to Success, graduated with a degree in social work. Jade is now involved in an Idaho program called One Church, One Child, which encourages churches to connect their congregations with foster youth in need of adoption. Jade entered foster care as an older teenager and quickly recognized her own passion for helping other foster youth. Today, she works at the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare. Recently she told us, “I am so passionate about this work! Thank you to Foster Care to Success and to all of the staff who assisted me in college to get to this point in my life!”

Here’s Jade in the video for One Church, One Child.

A Red Scarf…For ME?

| May 17th, 2012

Foster Care to Success’ Red Scarf Project is rewarding in so many ways. Each year we send thousands of handmade red scarves to students all across the country. Imagine our surprise when we got a couple back!  Alumnus Joshua Gray (B.S.W. Syracuse University, 2010) sent two members of our scholarship team beautiful scarves along with the following note: “I thought since I have my red scarves to always remind me of your kindness, I could return the favor and send you a reminder of my gratitude.” Thanks Joshua (and check us out in our new scarves)!
