Sara B., congratulations!
Sara first received an FC2S scholarship in 2007, when she was working on her associate degree. This month, age 30, she finally accepted her diploma from Edison Community College in Florida, with a cumulative 3.34 GPA. In the fall, she will attend Evangel University in Springfield, MO to study elementary and special education and receive certification as a minister.
Why did it take so long? Sara aged out of foster care in Michigan before there were many supports for transitioning youth, her financial situation was often precarious, and she could count on little to no support from her family. After struggling with school and independence for several years, she moved to Florida where she found a base of support through her new church.
Community means the world to Sara. Her church friends supported her and introduced her to the mission work that is now her passion. When she needed surgery for two herniated discs, United Way paid for the procedure. And her FC2S mentor has always been – and will always be – there for her.
Congratulations, Sara, on your huge accomplishment.
Tomorrow, meet Chelsea.
